FILLINGS

Dental fillings are used to restore teeth damaged by cavities or minor fractures. They seal the tooth and prevent further decay.

For children, tooth-coloured fillings are commonly used for both function and appearance.

Benefits of dental fillings:

  • Restores shape and function

  • Prevents cavity progression

  • Maintains natural bite

EXTRACTION

Tooth extraction involves removing a tooth that is severely decayed, infected, or affecting the alignment of other teeth.

In children, extractions are done carefully to ensure proper space and development of permanent teeth.

When extraction may be needed:

  • Deep cavities or abscess

  • Retained baby teeth

  • Orthodontic reasons

SPACE MAINTAINER

A space maintainer is a small dental device used in children to preserve the gap left by a prematurely lost baby tooth.

It ensures that the permanent tooth has enough space to come in correctly.

Why space maintainers matter:

  • Prevents misalignment of teeth

  • Helps guide proper eruption of permanent teeth

  • Reduces future orthodontic issues

PULP THERAPY AND CROWN

Pulp therapy (similar to a root canal for baby teeth) is done when the inner pulp of a child’s tooth is infected or damaged.

After pulp treatment, a stainless steel or tooth-coloured crown is often placed to protect the tooth.

Purpose of pulp therapy with crown:

  • Saves the tooth until it naturally falls out

  • Maintains chewing function

  • Prevents damage to surrounding teeth

SERIAL EXTRACTION

Serial extraction is a planned removal of selected baby teeth to guide the proper eruption and alignment of permanent teeth.

It is part of preventive orthodontic care in growing children with crowding issues.

When serial extraction is considered:

  • Severe dental crowding

  • Abnormal tooth eruption sequence

  • Early orthodontic planning

HABIT BREAKING APPLIANCE

Habit breaking appliances are dental devices used to help children stop habits like thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or mouth breathing.

They are custom-made and gently condition the child to avoid the habit over time.

Helps with correcting:

  • Thumb/finger sucking

  • Tongue thrust

  • Prolonged pacifier use
